Tour del Frencho and our future

So I am over at the Thingelstad compund (my western, minnetonka training center) watching today’s TDF stage with the crew and their friend Jim. To be honest I am growing (can you grow negatively? shrink?) more and more bored with the tour, mostly related to the doping charges/fiascos, but also because it is hard to keep caring about something when you get random phone calls from friends saying – did you hear about this? Or about this other name in involved in X” or whatever… While dan empfield over at slowtwitch seems to be asking for a balanced view and seems to me to think that the “anti-doping bandwagon” is at it again, I would like to see our sport, triathlon, attack this head on before it becomes cycling’s cousin.

Just watching this stage we had the VS guys talking about baseball roiders, football players with dog fights, and IRONMAN CHEATERS as they tried to announce that Vino was out. That hurt. You know how little coverage the mass media gives us? NBC throws us a race 3 times a year, and I am appreciative and tivo them (just watched 70.3 worlds again last night!) – but general sports outlets?? We almost get nothing, so to hear our sport on the “list” of problem sports blows.

While, the crux of the problem lies with the $$ of doing the tests, what if the WTC/ITU said: to race tris you have to submit DNA 4 times a year. Yes the invasion of privacy advocates might freak, but for every job you have to make sacrifices. As a bond trader I am submitted to all sorts of paperwork and financial restrictions on what I buy, when, from whom, how much, for what reason, etc. It is brutal, but that is part of my profession.

My brother in law actually just asked me why I am on the computer instead of watching the stage – well it has to do with the fact that sitting in Racine on Saturday, before our Half-IM, we were riveted on the TT – and that was a waste of time. Vino cheated, and who knows how many more. Those hours are not coming back, but all the hours going forward that I watch (since chelle still likes it) will prob be split with lots of blogging/video editing…
