All Triathlon, All the Time

Swimming at the YMCA

Listening to the Duke Spirit –

I have had a gym membership at the downtown Minneapolis YMCA for years now and really enjoy having such a great gym right behind my work. Today is about the 4th time I have swam a good set since Ironman Wisconsin and here are 2 thoughts:

1) I swim for triathlon. Every year the first thing that stops and the last one to re-start is swimming. Don’t get me wrong, I love the water and would love to live close to the ocean, but endless cold water 5:30am dips into a chlorinated pool is just not that fun.  But Ironman Arizona starts with a 2.4 mile swim so I better get started!

2) And the more important though – the girl next to my lane today was blind. I did not realize it at first since she was tying water noodles to the lanes so she could tell when she was getting close to the edge. I just thought it was some new fangled swimming drill I hadn’t heard of it.  But after a few laps I realized that she needed those and I heard her tell the lifeguard that a while back she hit her head and got a concussion on the side of a pool.  I’ll tell you one thing: my “oh what is that in my left knee?” and the “humm I think my shoulder hurts a little” and the “man staring at this pool bottom is getting boring” went away – real fast.

It was a very, very, good-slap-in-the-face-wake-up and be thankful moment.
