Official 2008 Buffalo Triathlon Results

I’ll have my race report up sometime (flight from Guatemala at midnight, go to sleep at 1am, wake up at 5:30 am with hardly any gear ready), but for the now this is the quick recap on what proved to be a great day for racing at the 2008 Buffalo Triathlon just west of the Twin Cities at Sturges Park.  As an aside, This race falls the same day as the Pigman Sprint in Iowa so usually our elite field is split up.  The Iowa race is part of the Midwest Multisports Series, while Buffalo is the first Olympic distance race of the Tri Minnesota Series.

Chris Legh won again on the men’s side, with Curt Wood just barely missing second place after bonking. I don’t know what exactly happened since as soon as I saw Chris Legh on the run I was counting thousands to see what the gap was to second guy (which I was pretty sure would be Curt) – it was at about mile 5 (Buffalo Tri is a complete out and back) and Curt looked good and ready to win the amateur race. Some people said he fell right before the end – who knows, I’m sure he’ll update us all at some point on his blog – but for now hopefully Curt is doing alright and nothing serious happened (and yes he’s my pick for Best of the US which gets chosen at Lake Waconia). So second place was taken by Samuel Hauck who is 24 year old I have never seen place this high. I mean that kid ran 5:31s, and beat out some serious competition (Dan Cohen, Brett Lovaas, etc) with a 1:57:39. On the women’s side a very small elite field (only five girls? what’s up with that? well some were down at Iowa doing the Pigman Sprint) was taken by twenty four year old Katherine McCann with a minute to spare. Mary Beth Tuttle in second and Becky Younberg in third rounded out the podium. Sorry I don’t have more commentary (I’ll try to make it up ladies, I promise).

On the Buffalo Triathlon Sprint side Eric Ellingson (one of the fastest twins in the Twin Cities) won the men’s with three minutes to spare, with Jesse Nelson in second and Jesse Adams in third. The women’s side was taken by Laura Swartz with a 2 minute gap on Kristin Pletsch, followed by Jill Ellenbecker. A shout out to my boy Caius Rickard who took second in the 16-19 age group and who has been patiently training me in at gear west (hey cash registers are complex machines).

Very well run race. One thing to improve on is the pre-race briefing. It was a little long and took away from crucial warm up and stretching time. All people need to know is the route and possible problem areas on the course. 5-10 minutes at the most. Please save additional information for the end. Otherwise please give a heads up that the meeting could last a half hour and be warmed up prior to the briefing. Otherwise great job! I was very impressed and had a great time.
