Oceanside / Ralph’s / Ironman California 70.3

This was my prediction for the Oceanside / Ralph’s / Ironman California 70.3 race this Saturday:

“Alright peeps, the American season starts with a bang as the chilly waters off California greet quiet a cast of pro rock stars. There are some big names below and as always some will drop out and some will come out of the woodwork and surprise at Oceanside. But this is where ’08 begins for us and might give some insight into how the off season has treated some of our 1%ters. IMAZ and St. Anthony’s are still weeks away so everyone can still focus on this one.

Podium for me:
1) Mirinda Carfrae – she will one day take the fastest IM marathon title from Bentley but for now she can have it for 70.3s
2) Mchellie Jones – her ear should be better by now and she probably has been itching to race.
3) Samantha McGlone – forget the famous tattoo, this lady is one fierce competitor.

1) Craig Alexander – he has gone a few months without a victory – that is a rare occurrence and mean reversion will occur this weekend.
2) Andy Potts – the reigning world champ, what else can you say?
3) A surprise! Mr Zach or DKT hold the runner’s off? Maybe Ambrose has his day in the sun – or Richie hangs tough? hard one to predict here”

What actually happened was that Andy Potts lead for the majority of the race, Steve Larsen got fastest bike split, and Craig Alexander with 400 meters to go passed Andy only to see Andy surge back ahead and win by 3 seconds! Yes a little reminder of the Hamburg World’s where Gomez tried surging and was repassed – once I find some video on it I will link to it.  David Thompson was actually only a few minutes behind leading on the run but it looks like he faded a little to finish 4th – he’s just going to get faster as the season progresses and it’s the first triathlon of his 26 race season.  On the women’s side Erika Csomor came out of nowhere and left Mirinda, Lenada, Mcglone, and Michellie in the dust! Races are just like March Madness – rankings don’t matter – get out there and race!
