Escape From Alcatraz

Speaking of tri-california, ths weekend is ANOTHER classic of our sport: Escape From Alcatraz. If you don’t know about this race listen up: they ferry you towards the island (since authorities don’t want 1,000 neoprened-out-triathletes actually on the island) and get you as close to it’s shores. Once the race begins, you jump out of the ferry and swim 1.5 miles (approx. cause of the ocean tides) back to San Fran. You then make the longest transition ever – 1 mile – to your bike. The bike is 18 miles and then you head out for 8 miles of running. Yes the distances are quiet different than most other races with a >1/2IM swim, <oly bike, and >oly run.

Becky Lavelle won it in ’06, while on the guys side Matt Reed (not to be mean but those cytomax letters are annoying). And yes our main man DKT blasted the bike with the fastest split (22.9 mph ~ tough course). Let me ask you this? Do you think he won’t do it again this year? I’m not a betting man, but it is very hard for me to see him not crank this one out (as well as lifetime in July). They televise this one nationally, so I’ll post on it once it comes out.  Oh and hey local coaches turned pros John Shelp and Dan Cohen will also be competing.
