2008 Madrid BG Triathlon World Cup, Men: Javier Gomez takes first at home

While in the women’s race we saw an unparalleled mark get broken by Vanessa Fernandes, the elite men at the 2008 Madrid BG Triathlon World Cup saw home favorite Javier Gomez rise above the rest to capture his 10th World Cup title. In case people were thinking that his less than stellar showing in Portugal, he once emerged victorious in his home country and stretched his ITU podium streak to 16 races (Portugal was just Euro Champs). Just as we saw with the German women, there was one slot open for a German triathlete to head to Beijing. Instead of some more well known names, Christian Prochnow clinched his spot for the Olympics by placing fifth. Lastly, in what us back here in the United States keep watching closely, Matt Reed (already secured his own Beijing slot) scored a few more points for us as we try to out duel Russia to become teh last country that can take three men to the Olympics.
